Can Rottweilers Eat Peanut Butter?
Rottweilers are great pets to have, but wondering if you are doing everything you can to take care of them is tricky. Especially knowing what or what not to feed your Rottweiler is important for their health.
Eating a controlled amount of peanut butter will not cause any physical harm to Rottweilers. Peanut butter is a great source of protein for dogs. Rottweilers love peanut butter and it is a fun treat for them to have as a reward.
We know most human food is not good for dogs, however many people wonder if peanut butter is something that will hurt or help dogs. This post should answer any questions you have about feeding your Rottweiler the fun treat peanut butter.
Peanut Butter for Rottweilers
If you have ever found that your Rottweiler loves you a little more when you have some leftover peanut butter on your hands or clothes, that is because peanut butter is a treat that Rottweilers love, and most dogs for that matter.
Peanut butter is rich in natural fats, heart-healthy fats, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, and Niacin. All of these things will be very beneficial for your Rottweilers health to have. Peanut butter is a great way for your dog to get those fats and vitamins.
I know my dogs have loved when they got a spool full of peanut butter as a reward for doing something good. That is a great way to use peanut butter.
When training your Rottweiler, if you need a reward, peanut butter is a fairly healthy substitution for less healthy treats many dogs love.
However, peanut butter shouldn’t be something that your Rottweiler eats an entire jar of in one sitting. As with all things in life, moderation is key to keeping your pup healthy.
Too much peanut butter can actually have the exact opposite effect. Think of yourself when considering giving your Rottweiler peanut butter. How much would you eat? What kind do you think would be most healthy for you?
Chances are it will be pretty close to the same for your pup. Knowing that what is unhealthy for you is probably also unhealthy for your pet is a good rule of thumb for any food decisions.
How Much Peanut Butter Can My Rottweiler Eat?
There are a couple of things to consider when figuring out the amount of peanut butter that is best for your Rottweiler. Each dog is different, so there is no one “scoop” fits all for what amount is best.
Always refer back to your vet. Your dog’s personal veterinarian is going to know your Rottweiler best, and they will know his or her health needs and concerns. If your vet advises against peanut butter altogether, listen to that advice, and do what is best for your dog’s individual health needs.
Your vet can also advise you in the amount of peanut butter that will not be harmful to your dog.
Another thing to consider when deciding how much peanut butter you should feed your Rottweiler is the number of other treats you are feeding him or her.
Treats for all people and animals must be eaten in moderation and so if you are feeding your dog a lot of other treats in addition to the peanut butter, it would probably be best to not feed him or her as much peanut butter.
A dog’s diet should consist of 90% regular dog food and 10% treats. As you monitor what other treats your Rottweiler is eating, make sure include the peanut butter he or she in your calculations. This amount of treat your pup is eating must not exceed 10% of all of the food they eat during the day.
Plain Peanut Butter or Peanut Butter Treat
Peanut butter is such wonderful food that has so many different ways you can use it. This goes for people and dogs. Where your Rottweiler would love to just lick peanut butter off of a spoon, there are lots of other ways you can add peanut butter into their diets through treats.
First, a spoonful of peanut butter is always a good go to. Like mentioned above, your Rottweiler would love and be completely satisfied with just that.
If you are looking to be a little more creative though, there are so many peanut butter cookie dog treats that are even more delicious.
If you mix peanut butter with flour, egg, salt, and even some pumpkin, shape that into cookies, and pop it in the oven it will make some yummy dog treats. The link for the rest of the recipe is here.
Another peanut butter trick is to put a scoop of the stuff into an ice tray and then freeze it. Then you have individual little cubes of peanut butter. Let it thaw a little bit before giving it to your Rotty, but that gives them something to chew on or lick for a little bit.
Many grocery stores and pet stores also sell peanut butter treats made specifically for dogs. Those would be a good treat that you can be sure is safe for your Rottweiler.
The Kinds of Peanut Butter
You love your Rottweiler and you want to make sure that you don’t feed him or her anything that is going to hurt them. Making sure you know what kinds of peanut butter to use will help them stay healthy.
It is wise to buy plain or unsalted peanut butter. The sodium in the peanut butter is not very good for your Rottweiler. Going with the unsalted kind is an easy solution for this. Less sodium is also healthier for other reasons, in addition to an excess of sodium being harmful.
Homemade peanut butter is also a really good way to know exactly what goes in your Rotty’s mouth. Homemade peanut butter is also usually much healthier than store-bought because it doesn’t have as much sugar. In fact, it can have no sugar if you choose.
Homemade peanut butter is very easy to make as well. All you need to do is put peanuts in a food processor and let it run for a few minutes. It is better for your dog if you use dry roasted or raw peanuts when making your peanut butter.
After it is done in the food processor you can add honey if you’d like to add a natural sweetener, but your Rottweiler will be very happy with just the plain peanut butter.
A Word of Caution
Like mentioned a few different times in this post, moderation is so important to keeping your Rottweiler safe when introducing them to this new treat. A few things to watch out for when feeding your pup peanut butter or when you are buying it from the store.
Some peanut butter brands have aflatoxins in them, which can cause cancer, so that isn’t very good for your dog. But if you look at the food label on the peanut butter before you buy it and make sure it doesn’t have that, then it should be just fine for your dog.
It is also important to watch out for the ingredient Xylitol. This is something that can be harmful to your Rottweiler. Not all kinds of peanut butter will have this though, just look out for it.
If your Rottweiler eats too much peanut butter, those natural and healthy fats can become bad for them. If they eat too much peanut butter with sugars in it, the sugar can be harmful to their health.
Also, because it is high in fat, again, too much can lead your pup to gain too much weight. This can lead to obesity and health challenges including pancreatitis.
It is also always good to remember that there are healthier treats that your Rotty would love as a replacement or in addition to peanut butter. Making sure you use both will keep your dog’s health in a good place.
Peanut butter is a great treat for your pup. As long as you monitor the amount eaten, and the type of peanut butter he or she eats, it will be perfectly safe for your Rottweiler.
